Some spices that taste similar to cumin are caraway seeds and black cumin seeds. A suitable substitute for cumin is a mixture of caraway seeds with anise seeds or chili powder. Use half as many caraway seeds as called for by the recipe.
Black cumin seeds are a smaller and sweeter seed which should be taken into account when preparing a dish using them as a substitute.
Cumin is a common ingredient in Southwestern dishes, most notably chili. Internationally, cumin is used in Mexican, Moroccan and Indian cooking with sausages, pork, rice, potatoes and dried apricot. Cumin is known for giving dishes prepared with it a warm feeling and compliments ingredients like tomatoes, chickpeas, garlic, yogurt and turmeric.
