One spiced hot toddy recipe that uses lemon juice is an apple cider hot toddy. To make an apple cider hot toddy, start with 10 ounces of apple cider, 4 ounces of a favorite whiskey and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Other ingredients include cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise and honey.
To prepare the hot toddy, warm the apple cider in a small saucepan over medium heat, along with 2 cinnamon sticks, 2 star anises and 8 whole cloves. Once the mixture reaches a boil, remove the pan from heat, and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Let the mixture steep for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
After the cider and spices have adequately steeped, remove the spices and discard them. Measure and add 1 1/2 tablespoons of honey. Be certain to stir it well to allow the honey to dissolve. Next, add the 4 ounces of whiskey. Honey-flavored whiskey works well, and brandy or rum may also be used in place of whiskey.
Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, and stir everything together. Taste the cocktail, and add more honey or spirits to taste. Serve the hot toddy garnished with apple and lemon slices. The recipe can be multiplied to serve more than one person.
