While there are several ways to soften hard brown sugar, one method involves placing a few apple slices into an airtight container with the brown sugar. In one or two days, the sugar softens and the slices may be removed.
- Slice an apple
This process requires only a few apple slices, not an entire apple. Take a medium-sized apple, cut it in half, then cut one of the halves into slices.
- Place brown sugar in an airtight container with slices
The brown sugar and the apple slices must be placed in an airtight container. This allows the moisture to go back into the brown sugar instead of evaporating into the air.
- Check the brown sugar
Periodically check the brown sugar. Once it softens, remove the slices. Expect to wait at least a day for the brown sugar to soften.
