To make an easy coleslaw recipe combine 2/3 cup mayonnaise, 1/4 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons milk, 2 tablespoons vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper, then add one bag of coleslaw mix. Cover the coleslaw and refrigerate it for a few hours or overnight for the best flavor.
For a non-traditional coleslaw, try adding different ingredients for various flavor combinations. An apple bacon coleslaw is made by combining 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon mustard, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce, 1 tablespoon sugar and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add one bag of coleslaw mix, a diced apple and four slices of cooked, crumbled bacon to the dressing mix. For Hawaiian coleslaw, mix together one bag of coleslaw mix, 1 1/4 cups mayonnaise, 1 can of crushed pineapple, 1 can of Mandarin oranges, 1/4 cup chopped Maraschino cherries and 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper.
Coleslaw can be served in a variety of ways, including as a main dish salad by adding leftover meat or fish, and cooked peas. Add the coleslaw to a grilled sandwich or wrap, such as barbecue pork or corned beef. Coleslaw can also be used as a topping for hot dogs or sausages, tacos or grilled meat.
