Simple roasted pork shoulder and oven kalua pork are two simple pork butt recipes that cook in the oven. With just a few ingredients, both recipes are easy to prepare.
To make a simple roasted pork shoulder, preheat the oven to 425 F. Combine 3 tablespoons each of olive oil and freshly chopped garlic along with salt and pepper in a small bowl. Coat a 4-pound pork butt evenly with the mixture, and place on a rack in a roasting pan. Put into the oven, and allow the pork to roast for 20 minutes, then lower the temperature to 325 F. Cook for approximately 4 hours until the pork butt reaches an internal temperature of 185 F, remove from oven, and let the pork rest for about 30 minutes.
Oven kalua pork is a very simple pork butt recipe requiring only two ingredients in addition to the pork. Preheat the oven to 275 F. Rub a 4- to 5-pound pork butt with 2 tablespoons of liquid smoke, cover tightly in foil, and place on a pan in the oven. Roast for 5 hours, and then allow to cool until the pork is comfortable enough to handle. Remove and discard the bone, and shred the meat, reserving the liquid.
Mix the shredded pork and 3/4 teaspoon of salt in a large bowl, adding the reserved meat juice to moisten, and serve.
