A simple cake recipe is basic vanilla cake, calling for only a handful of ingredients such as butter, flour, sugar, eggs and heavy cream or whole milk. Some other simple recipes include applesauce cake, lemon-ginger Bundt cake and chocolate pudding cake.
Make a simple, basic vanilla cake by mixing together 3 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in one bowl. In another bowl, cream together two sticks of softened unsalted butter and 1 1/2 cups of sugar. After a few minutes of mixing, add 4 eggs one at a time, and stir in 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. In a third bowl, combine 3/4 cup of cream and 1/2 cup of water. Alternately add the heavy cream mixture and flour mixture to the sugar and butter mixture.
Pour the batter into two round or one rectangle cake pan, and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 to 30 minutes. Allow a rectangular cake to cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pan and frosting. Allow the round cakes to cool completely before frosting and layering them. An alternative vanilla cake recipe uses whole milk instead of a heavy cream and water mixture.
