Melt 1 tablespoon of butter and 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pot, and add 3 to 5 diced celery stalks, 3 sliced carrots, 4 chopped garlic cloves and 2 to 3 cups of cooked great northern beans. Stir in 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of pepper and 1 teaspoon of cumin.
Add 1/2 head of thinly sliced cabbage and cook for five minutes. Add 6 cups of chicken stock, 1 to 2 cups of pumpkin and 8 ounces of tomato sauce. Bring the soup to a boil, and simmer it for 15 to 30 minutes.

Stir in 15 ounces of canned whole tomatoes, as well as 4 cups of chicken stock. Simmer the soup for 20 to 25 minutes, and sprinkle it with freshly ground black pepper.
