A simple cabbage roll recipe consists of combining meat, rice, onion, and spices into a filling and rolling it into boiled cabbage leaves. The cabbage rolls are placed in a baking dish, covered with tomato sauce and baked in an oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour.
A full head of cabbage is placed into a large pot of boiling water for 3 minutes. The cabbage is removed, and the outer leaves are removed and set aside. The cabbage is returned and the process is repeated until all of the leaves have been separated. The 16 largest leaves are needed for the cabbage rolls while the remainder of the cabbage can be served on the side.
The filling is created by cooking 1/2 cup of rice and adding it into a large mixing bowl with 2 eggs, 1 pound of ground beef, 1/3 cup of onion, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 teaspoon each of pepper and oregano. After the mixture is well combined, 3 tablespoons of the mixture is placed in the center of each cabbage leaf. The cabbage leaf is rolled tightly around the filling with the ends tucked in to completely enclose the filling.
The cabbage rolls are placed seam side down in a lightly greased baking dish. One 15-ounce can of tomato sauce is poured over the cabbage rolls before topping them with 3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese. The baking dish is covered with foil and placed in an oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 to 60 minutes.
