In 1946 after the end of World War II, a Del Monte Foods representative introduced eight independent grocers and encouraged them to consider cooperative buying. In December of 1946, the eight independent grocers formalized their cooperative relationship. In 1951, they all began using the ShopRite name to better advertise their prices. Within a year, the cooperative grew to more than 50 members strong. Presently, their merchandising and distribution section is the largest United Statesowned cooperative.
