The Safeway Score and Win game is a chance for participants to win a $1 million annuity prize. There are also mini-games where one has the potential to earn a $250, $500 or $1,000 Safeway gift card.
The Safeway Score and Win game started on October 8, 2014, and ran through the entire 2014-2015 NHL season in parts of Canada. The grand prize is a $50,000 annual annuity paid over 20 years. A person gains an entry in the grand prize drawing every time he or she shops at Safeway and uses the Air Miles Collector Card.
The game is linked to four Canadian NHL teams:
- Vancouver Canuks
- Calgary Flames
- Edmonton Oilers
- Winnipeg Jets
When a player on one of these teams scores five goals in one game, a name is drawn from all entrants. That person wins the grand prize.
There are also prize packs available to win through random drawings for each goal scored. If one of the teams scores a hat trick, which is when one player scores three goals in a row, a prize pack worth over $3,000 will be awarded to someone through a random drawing of names. In addition to prizes linked to the NHL games, 25 trips for two to Mexico will be given during 25 NHL telecasts throughout the season. Names are randomly drawn prior to each show.
