There are two different kinds of recipes for reindeer food. One is a delicious treat, perfect for Christmas snacking, and the other is a fun craft for kids to make in preparation for Santa's big flight.
The edible recipe calls for one package each of mini pretzels; crispy corn square cereal, such as Corn Chex; dry roasted salted peanuts; candy-coated chocolate, such as holiday M&Ms; and 24 ounces of chopped white chocolate. Mix all ingredients except for the white chocolate together in a large bowl. Melt the white chocolate in a double boiler over simmering water, stirring frequently.
Pour melted chocolate over pretzel mix, and stir to combine. Quickly pour the mixture out onto wax paper that has been taped to the work surface. Allow the confection to cool, break it into small pieces and store it in an airtight container.
Make a treat for Santa's reindeer by combining 2 cups each of regular oats and bird seed, along with 2 tablespoons each of red and green colored decorator sugar crystals. Stir the mixture together. On Christmas Eve, have children sprinkle the mixture outside for the reindeer. If desired, add red or green glitter to ensure the reindeer spot their snack. Wild birds will eat anything the reindeer leave behind.
