The ingredients in whipped cream icing, also called whipped cream frosting, are vegetable shortening, softened butter, powdered sugar, heavy or whipping cream and clear vanilla. Total preparation time for a single batch of whipped cream frosting is about 25 minutes.
To make a single batch of whipped cream frosting, cream 2/3 cup of vegetable shortening with 1/3 cup of softened butter. While the butter and shortening are creamed, add 1 pound of sifted powdered sugar to the mixture, and blend completely. Slowly add in the cream and vanilla, and beat the mixture on high for five minutes. Refrigerate the mixture; it can stay refrigerated for several weeks.
An alternative to whipped cream frosting is a "fake" whipped cream frosting that is made without the cream. To prepare three cups of fake whipped cream frosting, cream 1 cup sugar and 1 cup butter in a mixer for 10 minutes. Note that if a stand mixer is used, then the butter and sugar need only be creamed for five minutes. Stir 1 cup milk and 3 tablespoons of flour together in a saucepan, and cook until thickened. Cool the sauce, and then mix with the butter-sugar blend and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.
