A Shirley Temple is an easy to make drink that only requires three ingredients. Lemon-lime soda, grenadine, and maraschino cherries are all it takes to make this classic tasty drink.
While the Shirley Temple has many variations, the base recipe is very consistent. To start, fill a highball glass with ice for serving. Measure 1/4 cup of lemon-lime soda, such as Sprite or 7 Up, and pour it over the ice. Next, take 1 1/2 tablespoons of the grenadine syrup and add it to the soda. If you're making a larger batch, the general soda to grenadine ratio is eight to one. To finish off the drink, top it with any number of maraschino cherries, though a glass usually only has one or two.
Alternatively, you can make a Shirley Temple with ginger ale instead of lemon-lime soda. Some bartenders add a splash of orange juice or an orange slice.
There are also many alcoholic versions of the drink, one being made with half as much vodka as the measurement for soda. A Dirty Shirley uses equal parts light rum and cherry liqueur; it uses only half of the soda found in a traditional Shirley Temple. Gin and whiskey are also occasionally added to the recipe.
