To make saltine cracker dessert bars, line a jelly pan with a layer of saltine crackers, pour melted butter and sugar over the crackers, and bake for five minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cover the top of the crackers with 2 cups of chocolate chips, and spread them once softened.
Before preparing the dessert, butter a jelly pan or line it with foil. If a jelly pan is not available, use a pan with a lip sufficient enough to prevent the butter and sugar from bubbling over into the oven. The crackers, once soaked with butter and sugar, are likely to stick to the pan if it is not well lined or heavily greased.
Arrange about one sleeve of saltine crackers in a single layer on the lined pan. In a saucepan, boil 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of dark brown sugar for three minutes. Working quickly, pour the mixture over the crackers, and spread it over them with a spatula.
Bake the crackers for five to six minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the pan from the oven, and immediately sprinkle on 2 cups of chocolate chips. Let the chocolate soften for several minutes, and then lightly spread it over the crackers with a spoon or spatula. If desired, top with chopped nuts or sprinkle with sea salt.
