Paula Deen's Swiss steak takes about 10 minutes to get ready for the slow cooker and then an one hour and 30 minutes to cook. This recipe is rated easy and serves four people.
Start by cutting 1 1/2 pounds of round steak up into bite-size pieces. For best results, ask the butcher to place the steak in the cuber before packaging it. Use garlic, salt and pepper to season the meat before cooking, and use flour to dust the meat. Place the pieces of steak in a skillet with oil, and brown on both sides.
After browning the steak, place the meat in a Dutch oven or slow cooker. Mix together one 14 1/2-ounce can diced tomatoes, strips of 1 medium onion, strips of 1 medium-sized green pepper and 2 cloves of crushed garlic. Fill the empty tomato can with water, and add to dish. Pour all of this over the steak pieces. Allow this mixture to simmer on low heat until the meat is tender, and add water as needed to just cover the meat.
If you are using a slow cooker on low heat, check the instructions for making this type of dish. As a general rule, low heat is 200 degrees, and high heat is 300 degrees.
