What Is a Recipe for a Nicaraguan Dessert?

A popular Nicaraguan dessert is called tres leches. Tres leches is made with sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream and is a favorite in many Spanish-speaking countries.

Nicaraguan Tres Leches

"Tres leches" means "three milks" in Spanish. The three milks in the recipe refer to the sweetened condensed, evaporated and whole milks.

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 14-ounce cans sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 10-ounce can evaporated milk
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Grease and flour one 9x13 baking dish and preheat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Sift together the flour and baking powder into a large bowl and set it aside.
  3. In another bowl, combine the butter and 1 cup sugar together. Add the eggs and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and beat well.
  4. Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter and sugar. Combine well. Pour into prepared cake pan.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes, and pierce the cake with a fork evenly.
  6. In a large bowl, combine the whole milk, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk until well blended. Pour the mixture over the cooled cake. Place the cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow the milk to soak into the cake.
  7. Whip together the heavy cream, 1 cup of sugar and vanilla extract together until thick and creamy. Spread on top of the cake. Refrigerate overnight. Serve cold.
