A good recipe for moist yellow cake is Moist Yellow Cake from Martha Stewart or Rachael Ray's Super-Moist Yellow Cake. The recipes call for flour, butter, sugar, eggs and milk, as well as vanilla extract, salt and baking powder.
Start by sifting together 2 3/4 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl, cream 2 8-ounce sticks of softened unsalted butter until it becomes fluffy, and then slowly pour in 2 cups of sugar. After mixing the butter and sugar for eight minutes, drop in 5 eggs one at a time, along with 1 1/2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract. Alternate between mixing in the flour mixture and 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons of milk into the butter and sugar mixture. Mix the batter at medium speed until no lumps remain, pour it into a baking pan, and bake the cake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes.
For Martha Stewart's recipe, also sift together flour, baking powder and salt, but do so at least three times before adding it into the butter and sugar mixture with the milk. After baking the cake, allow the cake to cool in a pan for 10 minutes before upending it onto a wire rack for further cooling.
