BBC offers a recipe for meatballs in gravy on BBC.co.uk. The recipe involves making beef and pork meatballs and dressing them in a beef stock-based gravy. It calls for ingredients such as onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, flour, tomato purée and red wine.
Mix 9 ounces each of lean ground beef and pork with 1 small finely chopped onion, 1 finely chopped garlic clove, 1 ounce of fresh white breadcrumbs and 2 teaspoons of dried mixed herbs. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper, mix well by hand, then form the mixture into 20 small meatballs. Brown the meatballs in a pan with 2 teaspoons sunflower oil for about six to eight minutes, rolling them occasionally to prevent sticking. When browned, set the balls in a large saucepan with a lid.
To make the beef gravy, sauté a finely sliced medium onion with 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil in the meatball frying pan. After about five minutes, add 1 tablespoon of flour to the pan and stir. Gradually add 5 ounces of red wine to the pan along with 10 ounces of beef stock and a tablespoon of tomato purée. Transfer the gravy to the pot with the meatballs and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook gently for about 30 minutes.
Remove the lid and turn the heat to high, boiling the gravy for about five more minutes until it thickens. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
