A Manhattan is a mixed cocktail of rye whiskey, vermouth and bitters. The drink is served in either a martini glass or over rocks in a cocktail glass with a maraschino cherry, orange peel or lemon twist.
There are three simple steps to making a Manhattan:
- Pour 2 ounces of rye whisky, 1 ounce of vermouth and two dashes of bitters over ice in a glass.
- Stir until chilled.
- Pour through a strainer into a cold drink glass, adding the garnish of choice.
The Manhattan is said to have been first made in The Manhattan Club in the 1870s where it was enjoyed by Lady Randolph Churchill, mom to Winston Churchill.
