To prepare homemade fried dough, gather the ingredients: 2 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 3/4 teaspoon of salt. Also get 2 tablespoons of cold, unsalted butter and 3/4 cup of water.
Mix together the salt, baking powder and flour. Using a pastry blender or your fingers, work the cold butter into the mixture, and then stir in the water until you make soft dough. Cover the dough mixture, and let it rest for 15 minutes. Divide the dough evenly into eight pieces, and roll each piece into a thin 5-inch round that is approximately 3/8 inch thick.
Heat 3/8 inch vegetable oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit using an electric frying pan, or use the pan over a burner. If you do not have a candy thermometer, visually determine the heat of the oil to see how well the first piece of dough fries.
Carefully lower each dough piece into the pan, and let it cook for about a minute. It should puff on top and become a light golden brown on the bottom, at which point you flip it over and cook until the other side is golden brown. Do this to all the pieces of dough, and set aside the finished ones onto a paper towel to cool.
