To prepare a ham and cabbage dinner, begin with a smoked ham, several small peeled onions, carrots and potatoes. Place the ham in cold water in a large pot, and bring to a boil over medium to high heat. Allow the ham to simmer for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Place the onions, carrots and potatoes in the simmering pot, and bring to a boil over high heat to soften the vegetables. Lower the heat and allow the pot to simmer for 15 minutes. Cut, clean and quarter a medium head of fresh cabbage, and add it to the simmering water. Boil the cabbage, ham and vegetables on high heat for 20 minutes until the cabbage is thoroughly cooked. Reduce heat. and season with salt and pepper to taste.
A ham and cabbage dinner can be cooked in a slow cooker on low heat or using a large skillet and frying the ham and cabbage together. Additional root vegetables can also be used including celery, turnips or parsnips.
Serve the ham and cabbage meal by placing the ham on top of the cabbage and vegetables. Additional salt, pepper and butter can be used to flavor the potatoes and other vegetables.
