Sugar cookies are a simply made, low-risk and versatile dessert. Simple homemade sugar cookies can be baked with only flour, baking powder, sugar, butter, salt, egg, milk and powdered sugar according to chef Alton Brown for Food Network.
To make sugar cookies, sift together 3 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 teaspoon baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. In a different bowl, beat together 1 cup softened unsalted butter and 1 cup granulated sugar until light in color. With the mixer on low speed, add 1 egg and 1 tablespoon milk until well combined. Slowly add dry ingredients into bowl until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. At this time, divide the dough in half and wrap in waxed paper to refrigerate for 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees before rolling out dough. To roll dough, sprinkle rolling surface and rolling pin with powdered sugar, and roll to 1/4 inch thickness. Frequently check the underside of dough for sticking. If the dough becomes warm, cover with a cold baking sheet for 10 minutes or until cool.
Cut dough into desired shapes and place 1 inch apart on greased baking sheet before cooking for 7 to 9 minutes. Rotate cookies halfway through cooking process and remove from oven when edges begin to brown. Let the cookies sit on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring to wire cooling rack.
