Taste of Home features a recipe for cheese squares. To make this recipe, cream 1 cup softened butter, two 5-ounce jars of softened sharp American cheese spread and 1 egg until smooth.
Stir in one 4-ounce can drained chopped green chilies, ¼ cup salsa and 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese. Remove the crusts from two loaves thinly-sliced sandwich bread. Spread approximately 1 tablespoon cheese mixture on each slice of a loaf of bread. Top with bread slices from the remaining loaf; spread on the additional cheese mixture.
Cut each sandwich into four squares, and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes at 350 F.
Another cheese square recipe is Taste of Home’s Cinnamon Cream Cheese Squares. To make this recipe, begin by unrolling a tube of refrigerated crescent rolls. Place the rolls onto a lightly greased 13-inch by 9-inch baking pan. Seal the rolls’ seams and perforations; set aside. Beat two 8-ounce packages softened cream cheese, 1 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla in a large bowl until smooth.
Spread the cream cheese mixture over the rolls. Unroll another tube of refrigerated crescent rolls and stretch to cover the cream cheese mixture. Brush 1/4 cup melted butter on top of the dough. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar on top; bake at 350 F for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cut the baked recipe into squares when it is cool.
