Traditional bread pudding is topped with a rich vanilla sauce. In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup unsalted butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar and 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream. Warm up the ingredients over medium heat for five to eight minutes. Allow the mixture to thicken before stirring in 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract. Spoon the sauce over bread pudding.
For a unique twist, make a bourbon sauce.. Make the sauce by mixing together 1 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter, 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream and 4 tablespoons bourbon in a heavy saucepan. Bring the ingredients to a boil, and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Drizzle the sauce over bread pudding.
To make a luxurious salted caramel bread pudding sauce, whip together 1 cup white sugar, 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar and 3 tablespoons of water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring the ingredients to a boil. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
Continue to cook the sauce without stirring until caramelization begins to occur. Stir carefully to help the mixture develop even caramelization, continuing for 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and continue to cook until the color turns to a deep amber hue. Remove the sauce from the heat, and whisk in 1/2 stick of butter. After the butter has melted into the sauce, add 1/2 cup heavy cream and 1 teaspoon salt. Let the sauce cool for several minutes before spooning it over the bread pudding.
