Baked ziti combines ziti pasta with ground beef, onion, garlic, spaghetti sauce and oregano, in addition to mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. It requires 20 minutes of preparation time and yields eight to 10 servings.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook and drain a 16-ounce package of ziti noodles. Cook 1 pound of lean ground beef, 1 cup of chopped onion and 2 cloves of minced garlic in a skillet over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat, and add a 32-ounce jar of meatless spaghetti sauce, 1 cup of chicken broth and 1 teaspoon of dried oregano. Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes. Mix 1 cup of the sauce into the noodles.
Transfer half of the noodles into a large baking dish. Top with 1 1/2 cups of shredded mozzarella cheese and 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese. Spread 2 cups of the sauce mixture over the cheeses. Evenly distribute the remaining noodles, then pour the rest of the sauce over the top. Cover the dish, and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the dish from the oven, and remove the cover. Add more mozzarella and Parmesan cheese to cover the top of the ziti and sauce. Bake for another 10 minutes or until the cheese melts and begins to brown. Serve.
