A recipe similar to Chili's Awesome Blossom includes an onion sliced into a blossom shape and soaked in cold water to make it open. After draining the onion and dipping it in a spiced flour mixture, fry it in hot oil.
To prepare the onion, cut off the top 1/4 along with the onion stem, and peel off the skin, being careful to leave the root intact. Slice a vertical slit down the onion to just above the root before making additional slits in a pie-like fashion. Soak the onion in ice water for 30 minutes or until the blossom shape appears to bloom. In a medium bowl, combine 2 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder and 2 teaspoons McCormick seasoned salt. Place 1 cup buttermilk in a separate bowl.
After draining the water from the onion, dip it in the flour mixture followed by the buttermilk. Dip the onion in the flour mixture again before placing it into hot oil for deep frying. Fry the onion until golden brown, and remove it onto a plate after draining off excess oil. Cut out the center of the onion to make the petals easier to remove, and serve with your dipping sauce of choice.
