To make American chop suey, saute 2 tablespoons of garlic, 1 diced onion and 1 diced green pepper in canola oil. Place 1 pound ground turkey in the pan with the onion, cook until the turkey is browned, and stir in 1 28-ounce can Italian tomatoes. Cook 1 pound of macaroni until it is almost done, and stir the pasta into the meat mixture. Simmer the mixture for 30 minutes.
Alternately, cook 1 chopped onion and 1 chopped bell pepper in 3 tablespoons butter, and add 2 cloves minced garlic after 5 minutes. After 1 minute, add 1 pound ground beef, 1 teaspoon oregano and 1 teaspoon basil to the onion mixture.
Cook until the meat is browned, then add 1 14.5-ounce can each tomatoes and tomato sauce, 1/4 cup tomato paste, 2/3 cup tomato juice, and a pinch of sugar to the beef. Salt and pepper the meat mixture to taste, and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in 1 pound cooked macaroni and serve.
Another option is to cook 1 pound ground beef, 2 cloves mined garlic, 1 chopped onion and 2 green peppers in 3 tablespoons olive oil until the meat is browned. Add 15 ounces jarred spaghetti sauce, 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning and 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes and 1 pound cooked macaroni to the meat. Pour the chop suey into a baking dish, top with 1 cup shredded mozzarella and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes.
