One of the best recipes for ambrosia salad uses heavy cream, sour cream, marshmallows, sugar and nuts. It also includes a range of fruit, such as clementine oranges, fresh pineapple, coconut and maraschino cherries.
Start making ambrosia salad by whipping together 1/2 cup of heavy cream and 1 tablespoon of sugar. A stand mixer works best for this. Once stiff peaks form, mix in 4 ounces of sour cream. Measure out 3 cups of mini marshmallows, 1 cup fresh grated coconut, 1 cup toasted pecans, 1 cup chopped fresh pineapple and 1 cup of clementine orange segments. Drain 1/2 cup of maraschino cherries, and add them to the mixture. Stir everything until combined. Refrigerate the salad for a couple of hours before serving.
A simpler take on the classic ambrosia recipe uses only sour cream instead of a whipping cream and sour cream mixture. Drain a can of mandarin oranges and a can of pineapple chunks. Pour the fruit into a large bowl. Add 1 cup of flaked coconut and 1 cup of miniature marshmallows, then mix in 1 cup of sour cream. After everything is thoroughly combined, cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator. Chill the salad for a couple of hours before serving.
