To make apple dumplings quickly, cut a packaged refrigerated pie crust into 8-inch circles, place 1 peeled and cored medium-sized Braeburn apple in the center, sprinkle the sugar mixture evenly over the apple, and then spread a small amount of butter evenly over it. Fold the dough over the apples, using your fingers to pinch it sealed at the top, and bake it for 40 to 45 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Drizzle the pre-made syrup over the top.
To make the syrup, mix 1 1/2 cups of sugar, 2 cups of water, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg in a saucepan; bring the ingredients to a boil while continually stirring; reduce the heat; and let the syrup simmer for 10 minutes while occasionally stirring the mixture. After removing the syrup from the stove, mix in 1/4 cup of butter. To make the sugar mixture, mix 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon with 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg.
Use a 13-by-9-inch baking dish to cook the apples. If using 2 packages of refrigerated pie crusts and the stated amounts for the syrup and sugar mixtures, this recipe makes 8 apple dumplings. You may substitute Braeburn apples for Granny Smith or Golden Delicious apples. Serve the apple dumplings over vanilla ice cream if desired.
