Lactose-free milk is available for individuals who are not able to digest the primary sugar found in milk, as they lack the enzyme lactase. Because they are not able to digest regular milk completely, these individuals suffer from bloating, diarrhea and excess gas when ingesting it.
Infants who are lactose intolerant can suffer from colic often, and those with digestive disorders such as Crohn's disease can also benefit from switching to a lactose-free milk. Lactose-free milk is better for the overall health of these individuals, as it is a good source of calcium for bone and muscle maintenance. However, doctors do not recommend lactose-free milk for those with milk allergies, as the proteins found in lactose-free milk are the same as those in regular milk.
