Typically, use sliced fresh peaches, sugar, butter, flour and milk for the main ingredients of peach cobbler, along with other options for flavor, such as cinnamon. For a good homemade peach cobbler recipe, try Paula Deen's version, which only takes about one hour to make.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Combine 4 cups peeled, sliced peaches with 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a saucepan. Mix well and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook peaches for 10 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside to cool slightly.
Place 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) of butter in a 3-quart baking dish. Place the dish in the oven to melt the butter.
In a small bowl, mix 1 cup sugar with 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour and 1 1/2 cups milk. Pour the milk slowly and whisk continually to prevent clumping. Pour the mixture over the melted butter. Do not stir. Spoon the fruit mixture over the batter, gently pouring in the syrup. Sprinkle the top with cinnamon if desired. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes. The batter rises to the top as the dish bakes.
To serve, scoop portions into a bowl and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
