To prepare baked ziti with ground beef, combine a ground beef sauce and cheese, blend it with cooked ziti and layer it in a casserole dish. Bake the casserole for 20 minutes.
Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a pan. Saute 1 diced onion and 3 cloves of minced garlic until tender. Add 1 pound of ground beef and 1 pound of Italian sausage, and cook until browned. Drain off most of the fat. Pour two 14 1/2-ounce cans of tomato or marinara sauce and one 28-ounce can of whole tomatoes, with juice, into the skillet. Stir in 2 teaspoons of Italian seasoning and 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes. Add a dash each of salt and pepper. Reduce heat and simmer for 25 minutes.
Cook 1 pound of ziti according to package directions until almost al dente. Drain the cooked pasta and rinse with cold water.
In a large mixing bowl, mix together 2 cups of grated mozzarella cheese, 1 15-ounce tub of ricotta cheese, 1/2 cup of grated Parmesan cheese, 2 tablespoons of fresh parsley and 2 eggs. Add the cooked pasta, and mix until lightly combined. Sprinkle with a dash of salt and pepper. Add 3 to 4 cups of cooled meat sauce and toss lightly.
Place half the pasta into a baking dish. Cover the pasta with meat sauce and half of the remaining grated mozzarella cheese. Repeat with the remaining pasta, meat sauce and cheese. Bake in a preheated 375 degrees Fahrenheit oven for 20 minutes. Allow to rest for five minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.
