People can recreate the flavor of Old Bay Seasoning at home. Old Bay Seasoning lists celery salt, black pepper, red pepper and paprika as part of the recipe, but the actual spice blend is proprietary.
When making the seasoning at home, blend together about 2 teaspoons of black pepper, white pepper, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, ginger and paprika. Combine the mixture with about 2 tablespoons of ground bay leaves, ground mustard and celery salt. Finish it with a dash of red pepper, mace and cardamom. Each person's tastes are different, so the blend can include more or less of any seasoning, or even eliminate a spice, if desired.
Old Bay Seasoning started as a seasoning for fish and crab dishes more than 70 years ago. While it started out as a seafood seasoning, people now use it for pizza, casseroles, eggs and other non-seafood meals.
