Bon Appetit has a series of 29 classic recipes that it claims is true to what many grandmas likely prepare in their own kitchens. Recipes include roasted chicken, macaroni and cheese, creamed peas and onions, Swedish meatballs, and banana cream pie.
For banana cream pie, whisk 3 large egg yolks, 1/2 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons cornstarch and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan until smooth. Gradually whisk in 2 cups whole milk over medium heat, and while whisking constantly, bring the mixture to a full boil until it pulls away from the pan's sides. Remove from heat, and whisk in 2 tablespoons butter and 2 teaspoons vanilla. Fold in 3 sliced bananas, and after cooling slightly, pour the filling into a baked 9-inch pie crust. Cover and chill for 3 hours. Beat 1 cup chilled heavy cream with 2 tablespoons sugar and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla until peaks form, and spoon decoratively onto the pie.
For oven roasted chicken, place chicken, breast side up, on a rack in a roasting pan containing 1 cup water. Brush with melted butter, and after loosely tying its legs together and tucking its tuck wings under, bake for 30 minutes at 500 degrees Fahrenheit, basting with butter after the first 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and remove the chicken to rest for 20 minutes, brushing with melted butter. Place the chicken back into the oven for 45 minutes, basting every 10 minutes. Let it rest for 20 minutes before carving.
