One-bowl yellow cake and Italian pasta casserole are two recipes published by McCall's magazine. McCall's cookbooks and magazine publications were popular among females and housewives from the late 1800s until 2002. McCall's one-bowl yellow cake recipe first appeared in 1910. Italian pasta casserole is a recipe from a 1984 issue of McCall's Cooking School.
To make one-bowl yellow cake, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 1/4 cups of sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt with 1/2 cup of softened butter, 1 cup of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla in a mixing bowl. Beat the mixture on medium speed for four minutes, add two eggs, and beat an additional three minutes. Grease and flour two 8-inch cake pans, and pour half of the batter into each pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
McCall's Italian pasta casserole combines 4 ounces of cooked ziti and 1 pound of Italian sausage with a creamy white sauce and three types of cheese. Brown sausage in 2 tablespoons of oil and set aside. Melt 1/4 cup of butter in a saucepan, and whisk with 1/4 cup of flour for one minute. Slowly stir in 2 cups of milk and bring to a simmer, whisking continuously until the sauce thickens.
Remove from heat, stir in 1/4 cup of Parmesan, and season with salt and pepper. Toss the sauce with the cooked ziti. Combine 16 ounces of cottage cheese and 1/4 cup of Parmesan with a large egg, 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley, salt and pepper. Place half of the ziti in a greased 3-quart baking dish, and top with the cheese mixture. Add remaining pasta, sprinkle with sausage, and bake uncovered for 30 minutes at 350 F.
