One popular grocery store membership program is Kroger's, based on its rank as a number one retailer in 2014, according to National Retail Federation. Kroger's has a Plus Card that customers can sign up for in the store or online. The card allows customers to get special discounts on grocery items and earn points towards discounts on gasoline at Kroger's gas station.
Many grocery stores and retailers with grocery departments offer loyalty cards for customers to take advantage of discounts on food items. The largest retailers would boast the most customers using those membership programs. According to the National Retail Federation, the number one retailer in the nation was Walmart, but this store doesn't offer a loyalty card for customers. However, Walmart does own Sam's Club, which is a members-only wholesale grocery store.
Customers pay for a year-long membership to shop at the store and get groceries and other services at wholesale pricing. Sam's Club offers different levels of membership from basic access to the Sam's Plus membership that allows customers to earn cash back on purchases.
Other top retailers on the National Retail Federation's list that offer membership cards include, Costco, Target, Walgreen and CVS Caremark. Of these stores, Costco is the only other paid-membership retailer.
