Enjoyed by residents and tourists alike, the most popular type of food in Italy is pasta. Popular pasta dishes in Italy include Rigatoni alla Carbonara, Spaghetti con le vongole, Fettucine Alfredo and Penne alla Bolognese.
Two of the benefits of pasta dishes are that they are usually simple to make and usually only have a few ingredients. For example, Spaghetti alla Carbonara is made with long, thin pasta noodles tossed with pancetta, eggs, grated cheese and ground black pepper.
A little more complicated, Spaghetti con le vongole features fresh clams in the shell, olive oil, garlic, white wine, grated cheese and, as an optional ingredient, tomatoes.
Fettucine Alfredo and Penne alla Bolognese are dishes that are popular outside of Italy as well. Fettucine Alfredo is a basic butter, cream and Parmigiano cheese sauce tossed with long, thick noodles while Penna alla Bolognese is a meaty tomato sauce served with short pasta tubes.
