PBR stands for Pabst Blue Ribbon, an American lager sold by the Pabst Brewing Company based in Los Angeles, Calif. Between 1882 and 1916, blue ribbons were tied around each bottle resulting in the current name of PBR.
Frederick Pabst took over the Best Brewing Company in 1872 from his retiring father-in-law Phillip Best. The company claims that it named their beer Pabst Blue Ribbon after it won a blue ribbon at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Beginning in the early 2000s, PBR gained new popularity among urban hipsters. It has prominently appeared in many films and television programs.
