Paula Deen does not have a recipe for chocolate chess pie on her website. Her only published chess pie recipe does not contain any chocolate. A similar recipe that contains chocolate is the chocolate chess pie recipe offered by Southern Lady magazine.
To prepare chocolate chess pie according to the Southern Lady recipe, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Unroll half a box of refrigerated pie crust onto a floured surface, and roll the dough into a 10-inch circle. Fit the pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate. Fold the crust under the edge of the pie plate and crimp.
Combine 3/4 cup of sugar, 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of yellow cornmeal and 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a medium bowl. Place 6 ounces of chopped semisweet chocolate and 1/2 cup butter in a different microwave-safe bowl, and microwave on high until melted and smooth. Stop the microwave, and stir the chocolate at 30-second intervals. Allow the chocolate and butter to cool slightly before adding the other liquid ingredients.
Once the chocolate mixture has cooled, add 1/3 cup of heavy whipping cream, 4 large beaten eggs and 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Whisk to combine, then add to the sugar mixture. Stir to combine, and spoon into the prepared pie crust. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the center is set. Allow the pie to cool before serving.
