Any organization or person can purchase ginseng in West Virginia as long as they meet the prerequisites and become a registered dealer, and a list of dealers is available online at WVForestry.com. The selling and purchasing of ginseng begins on September 1 and ends on March 31 of each year. Possession of harvested ginseng root is prohibited the rest of the year unless a weight receipt is obtained through the West Virginia Division of Forestry.
The West Virginia Division of Forestry features the rules and regulations for ginseng digging, selling, purchasing and exporting in the state of West Virginia. Diggers of ginseng must make certain the plant is more than five years old and sell the ginseng to a registered dealer or obtain a weight receipt before the March 31 deadline.
Prerequisites to purchase ginseng include that the organizations must have a business license, Workers' Compensation Certificate of Insurance and application through the state's forestry division.
