How Does One Sterilize Jars in a Microwave?

According to Ready Nutrition, to sterilize jars in a microwave, one has to fill the jars halfway with cold water, insert the jars into the microwave and heat them on the high setting for at least 3 minutes. The water should boil so that the jars are completely sanitized.

Once sterilized, the jars should dry in a hot oven. Prior to placing the jars in the microwave, one can preheat the oven to 280 degrees Fahrenheit. One should place the sterilized jars upside down on a clean rack in the oven until they dry completely.

One can use these jars for preserving foods like jams and jellies. Sterilizing canning jars before storing foods in them can prevent the formation of bacteria in the jars. However, the conventional method of sterilizing canning jars involves placing them in a pot of water that must boil for at least 10 minutes.
