The official Rice Krispies treats recipe involves melting marshmallows in a pan with butter and mixing in dry Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal. The mixture is then placed in a baking dish to harden, after which it is easily cut into consistent pieces.
Gather 6 cups of dry Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal, 3 tablespoons of butter and one 10-ounce package of full-size marshmallows. Alternatively, 4 cups of miniature marshmallows can be used as an equivalent to full-size marshmallows. Set the burner on a stove to low heat and melt the butter in a large saucepan. When the butter is fully melted, place the marshmallows in the pan and stir the ingredients well until they are fully melted and mixed together. Remove the pan from the heat and add the dry Rice Krispies cereal. Stir the mixture well until the dry cereal is fully coated with the melted marshmallow and butter mixture.
Coat a 2-inch-deep glass or metal baking dish with a thin layer of butter, oil or cooking spray. Pour the Rice Krispies mixture to the baking dish and use a greased spatula or a hand with wax paper to set the mixture evenly into the dish, allowing the mixture to cool to room temperature. With a knife, cut the set mixture into the desired number of squares. While the Rice Krispies Treats are best enjoyed when served immediately, they can be stored for up to two days in an airtight container at room temperature.
