What Is the Method to Boil Okra?

To boil okra, bring a saucepan of water to a boil with lemon juice, add salt and bring back to a boil, and add cleaned okra. Boil for twenty minutes, or until tender. After the okra is cooked, add butter and salt and pepper to taste.

  1. Gather the ingredients and equipment

    Gather the following ingredients and equipment: medium saucepan, knife, strainer, butter, okra, salt, black pepper and lemon juice.

  2. Boil the water

    Place enough water in a saucepan to cover your okra. Add 1/2 a lemon's juice to the water per 2 pounds of okra being cooked. Lemon juice will prevent the okra from breaking apart and becoming slimy.

  3. Clean the okra

    Cut the tops off the okra and wash well.

  4. Add the salt and okra

    Once the water is boiling, add the salt. Bring back to a rapid boil and add your okra. Cook for 30 minutes, or until tender.

  5. Strain the okra and season to taste

    Strain the okra from the water. Season with butter and salt and black pepper to taste.
