A measuring cup is a graduated container used primarily for cooking and other household tasks. Measuring cups come in a variety of sizes, and many have the capability of measuring different amounts of either liquid or dry ingredients.
In the United States, most measuring cups are available in such increments as one-quarter, one-third and one-half cups as well as one- and two-cup amounts. Some measure in metric quantities as well. Measuring cups are generally made of glass, plastic or metal and often have a spout for easy pouring. Measuring cups allow accurate and consistent measurements for cooking and for such uses as adding laundry detergent or bleach to the wash.
