Although there are many different sizes for wine bottles, a standard bottle of wine has 0.75 liters. Wine bottle sizes range from the smallest that is a split to the largest called a paramount. While the split size has a liter capacity of 0.1875 liters, a paramount, which equates to approximately 36 bottles or 216 glasses, contains 27 liters.

There are 10 other sizes of wine bottle. Some have Biblical names, such as Jeroboam, Methuselah, Rehoboam and Nebuchadnezzar. The liter capacity of the Nebuchadnezzar is 15 liters, which is equivalent to 20 standard-size bottles.

When buying wine for a big occasion, it may be useful to know that five glasses of wine that are each 5 ounces are equivalent to one standard size bottle of wine.
