Although the commercials from the 1960s stated that it only takes three licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, research conducted by several schools show that it is as much as 411 licks. These scientific studies made use of both licking machines based on the human tongue and actual human experiments.
Engineering students from Purdue University in Indiana created a machine that mimicked the human ability to lick. That machine took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Human volunteers at Purdue averaged 252 licks to reach the center. At the University of Michigan, a similar machine registered an average of 411 licks to reach the center of a Tootsie Pop, while Swarthmore College students in Pennsylvania used human test subjects, who averaged 144 licks to reach the center of the pop.
