There are different variations of Waldorf salad but the original salad includes two to three diced apples, two to three diced celery stalks and 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts mixed together with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of mayonnaise and served on lettuce or simply in a bowl. The Waldorf salad became popular in the late 1800s when it was served at the New York City Waldorf Hotel. The original salad left out the nuts, but when the recipe was published in the book "The Cook Book" by the Waldorf's head chef, the nuts were included as a main ingredient.
Current recipes for the salad include adding a tablespoon of lemon juice to the mayonnaise, including dried fruits like raisins or chopped dates, increasing the sweetness with a bit of honey and adding herbs or spices like parsley or black pepper.
Serving the salad is done one of two ways. The traditional way is to serve the salad as an appetizer over a bed of lettuce or on a dish. Newer ways of serving it include adding chicken or turkey chunks and treating the salad as a main course.Learn more about Cooking
