To make a smoothie, blend 1/2 cup of yogurt, 2 to 3 cups of liquid and 1 to 2 cups of frozen fruit. If using fresh fruit, replace some of the liquid with ice cubes. Smoothie recipes do not require precise measurements.
The size of fruit sometimes requires adjustment depending on the type of blender being used. With normal household blenders, it is often necessary to cut the frozen fruit into smaller pieces to achieve a smooth finished texture for the drink. Blenders that are more powerful are able to cut through large chunks of frozen pineapple and similar fruits. If a blender is not available, a food processor works, but it makes pouring the drink more difficult.
Placing the frozen fruit pieces in the blender first helps ensure the blades chop them finely. It is sometimes necessary to add more liquid to puree the fruit in a regular blender. The additional liquid helps melt the fruit.
Vary the ingredients to adjust the flavor of the smoothie. Juices, such as pineapple or orange juice, create a sweet smoothie. Milk or non-dairy milk alternatives give the smoothie a creamy flavor and increase the protein. The addition of peanut butter, coconut flakes or other blend-ins at the end of blending helps keep smoothies from becoming boring.
