To make a simple baked spaghetti, cook the spaghetti in water till nearly done, and layer it over a coating of sauce in a baking pan. Repeat the spaghetti and sauce layers, and top with shredded cheese. Bake the dish until the cheese melts.
To make the sauce for baked spaghetti, simmer a combination of tomatoes, onions, tomato sauce, garlic, peppers, sugar, bay leaves and seasoning mix in water for approximately one hour in a stockpot. Cook crumbled ground beef in a skillet until the pink color disappears. Drain the fat from the meat, add it to the stockpot, and cook for another 20 minutes.
Once the spaghetti is almost cooked, drain the water. Coat the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with a small amount of sauce. Layer it with the cooked spaghetti. Repeat the sauce and spaghetti layers until the pan is filled. End the layers with sauce, and top the dish with shredded cheese. A combination of mozzarella, Monterey Jack and cheddar cheese works well.
Bake the dish in an oven preheated to 350 degrees. Allow the cheese to brown lightly while baking. Sprinkle the dish with parmesan cheese and cut the baked spaghetti into squares before serving.
