To make Rice Krispies Treats, melt 3 tablespoons of butter in a saucepan over low heat. Add one 10-ounce package of large marshmallows, and stir until melted. Remove from heat. Add 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal. Stir to coat the cereal. Spread evenly in a pan to cool.
You can microwave the butter and marshmallows instead of melting them on the stove. To do this, place the butter and marshmallows together in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for three minutes, stopping to stir after two minutes. Stir the ingredients together until they are completely smooth.
The recipe can be varied somewhat. You can use a 7-ounce jar of marshmallow crème in place of the large marshmallows. Also, you can use Kellogg’s Fruity Pebbles cereal in place of the Rice Krispies.
It is recommended that you use real butter and not substitutes, such as margarine or oleo. The treats can be safely stored in an airtight container for up to two days. They can also be frozen for up to six weeks. To freeze, place the squares in an airtight container. If there is more than one layer, put wax paper between the layers. Cover them tightly, and freeze.
